That's So Gay

I recently found on the GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network)website a set of ads geared toward teens to discourage the use of the phrase "that's so gay." Not sure how well it will work, but I do like the idea. Apparently the campaign was launched in October, and has won awards for creative and sensitive handling of the issue, which is good. Now the question is, will people listen?

There are three videos, each one featuring a different celebrity. Hillary Duff, Wanda Sykes, and, my personal favorite, Laurel Holloman of "The L Word."

Laurel Holloman's video is below. For the others, go to

I knew people in high school that would use "that's so gay"... except they spelled it "geigh" to differentiate. I didn't quite buy it.

Dan Savage, author of Savage Love and noted fag, on his podcast either this week or last week, ran into problems to say that something was dumb. He started with "retarded," realized he didn't want to use that, then moved to "gay"... and then just ended up in a muddle.

Twice. In one call.

Rather funny.

Because the implications of "that's so gay" or "that's so retarded" aren't there with "that's so dumb" or "that's so unintelligent" exactly-- but all of the phrases that do evoke the same kind of disapproval are all tied to other things that don't belong.....
